Where a Song Takes You

There are songs that can touch your spirit. Whether it reminds you of a joyous time, or maybe a heartbreak, your body remembers that tune and it may react. I used to love Atreyu in high school. One morning I decided to re-listen to the album and I had chills; my heart was racing,  I couldn't help but smile. I used to listen to my Lead Sails Paper Anchor CD everyday. I wasn't surprised that I remembered the words and drops. On the other hand, a recent listen of "Fall Afresh" sung by Amanda Lindsey Cook gave me a different experience.

I used to listen to "Fall Afresh" constantly within the four walls of my home alone. I yearned for peace, for stillness, for a respite from pain, anxiety, and stress. I wanted a refresh from the Lord; I wanted to wake up from my slumber of sadness. This song was my anthem; I wanted to be with the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). I wanted to be with the Prince of Peace who stills all waters and silences storms. I wanted to bring Jesus into my storm; my storm of a life.

Life was challenging then, it still has its challenges now. I would lean on the Lord so much; on His word and on His promises. Those words and promises are now etched into my heart and I am moved by memories of where I once was, to then compare to where I am now.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29: 11-13)

"I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears...Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry...The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all." (Psalm 34:4; 14-19)
